I am an Associate Professor of English at Saint Louis University and a Fellow of Gladstone’s Library in Wales. My research concentrates on making connections among Victorian literature, 19th-century music in Britain, and discourses such as gender, politics and science. My two monographs (2000, 2006), numerous articles and two edited essay collections (2005, 2013) are published in both music and literary venues. This research has contributed to BBC Two Television in the UK and has been supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities in the US. Believing strongly that scholarship should reach beyond the ivy tower, my recent growth areas include taking a leadership role in a documentary television project and writing the blog housed on this site, conducted in partnership with Gladstone's Library. I was educated at the University of Sussex (DPhil) and University of Cambridge (BA/MA) in the UK, and Oberlin College and Conservatory (BA and BMus) and Interlochen Arts Academy (Vocal Performance) in the US.
